Until It Does Us Part
I waited at the junction for him to pick me up, as usual. This wasn’t the first time, though every time, every date still felt like the first time. I would wait with my heart pounding, eyes darting around, trying to spot his car. We wouldn’t get much time, but those minutes were always priceless. I would relive every moment until we met again the next time.
But today felt different. Beneath the fluttering heartbeats and the familiar butterflies, something inside me sat quietly heavy, refusing to settle.
I tried not to overthink and kept reciting every positive, motivational love quote I could remember in my mind when he stopped near me and honked, pulling me back into the moment.
The customary hellos, the hugs, the long drive with soft music as we meandered through the hill roads…
And then we stopped.
The silence felt heavy, uncomfortable in a way it had never been before.
He held my hand like always, but I could read his eyes.
He slowly looked at me, and even before he began, I could hear the words forming in my mind.
Maybe I understood him just a little too well.
I felt a dead weight drop within me, landing in my gut, the impact already preparing me for what was to come.
