She Who Visits at Night
This...
This felt hauntingly familiar.
We had met before—across several time zones.
"I know you," I whispered,
locking eyes with her.
As I drew closer,
her sweet breath, warm and laced with an unspoken promise,
brushed against my face.
I closed my eyes,
letting the sensation wash over me.
This felt like homecoming.
She touched me, held me close,
pulling me into the solace of her embrace.
I melted into her warmth,
never wanting to leave this safe haven.
I clung to her like a child,
desperate for comfort.
She cradled me, rocking me gently,
a slow, rhythmic sway—
as if the world itself had softened.
She hummed in my ear,
a lullaby I had always known,
but could never quite remember.
A weightlessness settled over me,
like a feather caught in the breeze.
The tension in my body unraveled,
pain dissolving into the nothingness she offered.
Her kisses were soft,
each one lulling me deeper,
pulling me further—
far, far away—
toward the light.
A scene unfurled in my mind’s eye:
A spotless white bed,
smelling of fresh linens and something heavenly,
woven, it seemed, from wisps of clouds.
Soft. Inviting.
Everything my weary body had yearned for.
I slipped beneath the cushy quilt,
its warmth enveloping me like a familiar embrace.
Sinking into the bed,
I sighed.
Oh, please—
Let me stay.
Let me rest.
Just as I reveled in the ecstasy of surrender,
a cry shattered the silence.
Sharp. Insistent.
Pulling me back.
"What was that?" I asked her.
"There’s no one else here except us," I mumbled.
"Right?"
I looked up into her eyes.
She didn’t speak.
She only smiled—
a knowing, tender smile—
before slowly fading into the light.
My eyelids, heavy as stone,
fluttered open.
A piercing brightness seared my vision.
I gasped,
lungs filling with the weight of the waking world.
Then, instinct took over.
I pushed myself up from the bed,
stumbling toward the crib.
Scooping my little one into my arms,
I held her close,
murmuring soft comforts,
rocking her as she quieted.
And then—
a voice.
"I shall be waiting for you, my love.
I know you will need me soon.
Here I shall wait, with outstretched arms,
longing to hold you,
to caress you,
to heal you,
to revive you with all the energy
for yet another beautiful day of your life.
But remember—
I shall come only when you seek my presence,
when you truly desire my company.
So, until then…
Take care, my dear."
She kissed me softly—
a whisper of warmth against my skin—
before slipping away.
I exhaled,
a tear tracing a slow path down my cheek.
And I felt her absence.
The Goddess of Sleep.
