From LOL to Delulu !

Are you a millennial or boomer who is constantly flabbergasted by the Gen Z/Gen Alpha lingo?

In today’s fast-speeding world, communication has shrunk to “brb,” “tq,” “tc,” “gn,” and a whole lot of other jargons we’re still trying to familiarize ourselves with daily. A plethora of acronyms has made its way into the internet’s ever-expanding “slangtionary.”

Responses, in general, have become short and curt, whether in emails or text messages, all in the name of saving time and convenience.

But sadly, this style of communication has begun to influence how we speak. The focus has narrowed to conveying ideas with minimal use of words. We hardly pause these days to think about how we sound or the impact our tone might have on the listener.

Effective communication is about balance—it’s conveying messages with the right mix of words and emotions.
This applies to everyone, not just motivational speakers, orators, or stand-up comedians.

Laughter: The Universal Language

“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”
— Charles Dickens

Are you worried about aging lines, crow’s feet, or sunken eyes? Have the endless ads for face yoga workshops on social media tempted you?

Well, here’s an exercise that won’t cost a dime:

                        Just… Smile!

Yes, you heard that right. Flash your best smile! This tiny curve—powered by fifteen major facial muscles—can brighten your features, boost your mood, and improve your day.

Humor: A Tiny Stimulus with a Big Impact

How often do we add humor to our conversations? Have we ever realized the immense power it holds in communication?

A message wrapped in humor can instantly captivate listeners. Whether it’s a serious speech, a film, or even a book, humor lightens the mood and helps connect with the audience.

With stress infiltrating our homes and workplaces, who would prefer content that adds to our woes?

A hearty laugh releases endorphins—those magical “happy hormones”—giving emotional relief and improving mental and physical health.

The Role of Humor Across Contexts

Humor livens up conversations, makes interactions memorable, and helps speakers bond better with their audience. Professionals across fields—doctors, lawyers, HR managers, and more—have embraced humor as a tool to build rapport and foster trust.

For instance, a terminally ill patient doesn’t need constant reminders about mortality rates. Instead, light-hearted conversations with their doctor can strengthen the bond, alleviate fear, and enhance mental resilience.

In classrooms, humor boosts student engagement, improves memory retention, and creates a positive learning environment. Even in workplaces, a fun-filled atmosphere fosters motivation, creativity, and productivity.

Setting Boundaries with Humor

However, humor can be tricky. What’s funny to one person may not resonate with another. Always ensure your jokes respect people’s beliefs, faiths, and boundaries.

Self-deprecating humor, in contrast, is usually a safe bet. It portrays confidence and fosters relatability.

“Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment.”

— Grenville Kleiser

In a Nutshell

In a world inundated with negativity, let’s become carriers of positivity. Smile often, laugh generously, and sprinkle humor wherever you go. After all, humor isn’t just the cherry on top—it’s the secret ingredient to life’s recipe.

So don’t be “delulu,” reminiscing about the good old days when people took the time to type out full words instead of their disfigured versions.

Just go ahead and

 LOL!

You might just spark a laugh riot, spreading happiness in the process.
