Whether for good or bad, these moments are important chapters in our lives, bringing with them valuable lessons and experiences.
"Ting Ding Ding (music)... Attention passengers!! We have a full train today. So, please don't block the doors. We will be moving shortly. Thank you."
"Ting Ding Ding (music)... Attention passengers!! The train is reaching the next station in five minutes
"Attention! Please mind the gap."
"Attention passengers!! Please stand clear of the closing doors."
Phil had been intrigued by these voices ever since he was a little boy. He had always wondered who the person behind this voice could be, or if people even knew their identity!!
The voice, to him, was his only companion during his lonely train rides every day and eventually became his best buddy
"The voice seemed to know everything, he would think, and this amazed him.
As destiny would have it, Phil's first job was at the railway station as part of the crew management team, and that made him feel overjoyed and elated.
He would happily go to work every day
and enjoy his work and his workplace.
He would get to hear his favorite voice boom all over the place, from morning to evening, and felt a sense of comfort sweep over him at the familiarity and warmth of the voice.
One day, there happened to be a software issue at the control room, and the automated announcements stopped abruptly. There was chaos and confusion everywhere, and people were frantically trying to come up with a solution to restore normalcy. They had to make someone do the announcements perplexed about who would dare to take on the responsibility.
That's when Phil stepped in, with a bit of hesitation.
Phil, the quietest boy in school, had always been ridiculed and laughed at for his sweet, feminine voice. He was called names and bullied throughout his life, and this, in turn, had made him an introvert, who preferred to keep silent.
Sensing the urgency of the situation, Phil felt a strong urge to step forward and show people what he was capable of. And he did!
He picked up the microphone with trembling hands, glanced at the computer screen close by, and then in an impeccably flawless voice, he announced:
"Attention passengers! We sincerely apologize for the delay. There has been a system malfunction. We shall resume service shortly.
He switched off the microphone and breathed a sigh of relief! He could feel his heart thumping in his throat and his eyes welling up with tears.
People in the announcement room were dumbfounded at what they had just witnessed. They had never before come across a human voice so perfect and strikingly close to the automated one. And such an impromptu demonstration of the same!
They were relieved and overjoyed and clapped their hands in encouragement.
The supervisor was totally impressed and patted Phil on the back,
"Well done, young man. You reminded me of those good old days, much before the invasion of computers.
Back then, announcements were done by humans who cared and served people day in and day out, tirelessly and sincerely. We used to call the announcer, 'The Northern Star!'
She would care, nurture, and take utmost care of her passengers and make sure they reached their right destinations on time, guiding them throughout their journeys, however long or short they may turn out to be
Thank you, my man, for saving the day and bringing back the lost lili memories."
He turned to leave and then paused at the door. "If you're willing, you could continue to work as the announcer at this station. We would be glad to have you aboard."
Phil was lost and it took him some time to return to reality and make sense of the things that were actually happening for real!
He was flooded with emotions when he realized that his voice, something he had been ridiculed for and mocked at by people throughout his life, could actually be of service to humans in the most purposeful way!
He consented with a heavy heart filled with pure gratitude, and from that day, he became
"The Northern Star!"
